Electrical Safety in Storm Season

Posted on Mar 06, 2015

20081003_macquarie_MG_8137

It may not feel like Spring just yet, but it’s just around the corner. Spring season means storm season in the Midwest, and a higher chance of electrical mishaps. Read the following advice and keep it in mind so that you can avoid electrical hazards.

If you are outside during a storm:

  • Stand away from other people.
  • Avoid water, and metal. Stay away from anything damp, even grass.
  • Don’t stand near trees or any tall objects. Move to a low point. Lighting will strike the tallest object.
  • Stay away from downed power lines.

If you are driving during a storm:

  • Use caution. Drive slowly, or pull off the road to a safe area if possible.
  • Do not use electronic devices in your car.
  • Do not leave your vehicle, unless you have to. If so, jump out with both feet so that they touch the ground at the same time.

If you are inside during a storm:

  • Use cordless phones.
  • Avoid contact with water and plumbing.
  • If you have time before the storm, unplug all electrical devices from the walls.
  • Stay clear of windows and doors.

The most important thing to remember is to be aware of your surroundings and avoid hazardous electrical situations if you can. Call 911 immediately if there is an electrical situation that endangers you or others.

Invest in Your Energy Future

light-bulb-3943-1920x1080

Sure there are things you can do now to save on your energy bill next month (see our post on Energy Saving Tips for Your Business) but what about the future of energy in your business? There are several things you can do now that may cost more but will save you more in the long run.

High Energy Efficiency Products- The most important thing to remember when you go shopping for new products and equipment is that they are energy efficient, such as ENERGY STAR® certified equipment.

Power Strips- Use advanced power strips to save energy and make turning off unused electronics much easier.

Door Seals- Take a look at your refrigerator door seals, and seals on doors that lead to the outside. Consider replacing them if there if they are old or you suspect not working properly.

Windows- Replace those drafty windows with newer energy conscience windows.

Insulation- Improve insulation in walls and ceilings to decrease temperature control needs.

Exit Signs- Replace your old exit signs with energy efficient longer lasting LED exit signs.

Computers- Consider switching from desktop to laptop computers, which use considerably less energy.

These options are more costly now but will pay for themselves in no time. Make the step to help your business save money and be more energy efficient.

Energy Saving Tips for Your Business

Posted on Dec 05, 2014

Energy saving translates to money saving for your business. Follow these simple tips and watch your energy bill shrink this month:

Adjust the Thermostat– Adjust your thermostat just seven to ten degrees for eight hours per day and save a decent percentage on your bill. Buy a programmable thermostat that will do this automatically for you.

Use Fans– Don’t turn up the air conditioning if a fan will do the trick. Fans can make a room feel up to ten degrees cooler.

Block the Sun– Close blinds and drapes on the east and west sides of your building when it’s hot outside. When it’s cold, unblock windows on the southern side to contribute solar heat.

Clean HVAC Filters- Clean or replace HVAC filters according to the recommended schedule. Make sure registers, baseboards, heaters, and radiators are clean and clear of furniture or drapes.

Check the Duct System- Ask your service technician to check the duct system for leaks, faulty filters, or other issues. A leaky duct can lose 15-20% of airflow.

Use Natural Light- No need to turn on the office light when you’ve got a big window and it’s bright outside.

Install Motion Sensors- Put motion sensors in areas like conference rooms, bathrooms, and break rooms. No need to worry about forgetting to turn off the light.

Replace Incandescent Bulbs- Replace those bulbs with higher efficiency fixtures that may use up to 75% less energy and last 10 times longer.

Use Sleep Mode- Ask employees to set their computers to sleep mode after a certain amount of time. You can also do this with printers.

Unplug- Ask employees to unplug mobile phone chargers when finished charging. The same goes for anything else that is plugged in and not being used. Electronics use up energy when they are plugged in, even if they are not turned on.
